We all want our dogs to stay with us as long as possible. However, nowadays the life expectancy of pet dogs is much lower than it used to be decades ago. Some factors may include irresponsible breeding and poorer quality of food. Nonetheless, we all can make sure we extend our dog’s lifespan by doing a few things. Here are some of them:
1. Give Your Dog Nutritious Food
It is important that you buy your dog premium pet food with the right nutrition. Good pet food should contain at least 18% crude protein, 70% meat, and 5% fat. Pet food should also contain healthy carbohydrates as well as nutrients and minerals.
2. Add Supplements To Your Dog’s Diet
Supplements will add extra vitamins to your dog’s meals which he may not get from eating pet food. For instance, joint supplements can support a dog’s joints, which get weaker with age, while omega 3’s and vitamin D are anti-inflammatory, and good for the heart and brain.
3. Daily Exercise
Daily exercise will ensure your dog is fit and stays a healthy weight, cutting out risks associated with obesity which could shorten your pet’s lifespan. It also makes for a strong heart and bones, builds muscle, and lowers blood pressure.
4. Regular Vet Check-ups
Regular trips to the vet are important for your dog’s longevity because they can diagnose certain illnesses and diseases, then treat them early. A vet can also check if your dog is adequately fed, properly nourished, and can give any advice on your pet’s health.
5. Look After Your Dog’s Oral Hygiene
Dogs with poor dental hygiene are prone to dental decay and gum disease, which cause bacteria and plaque to build up. As a result, your dog swallows this bacteria while eating, increasing the chance of kidney infections and heart valve problems. Remember to provide your dog with dental sticks, or use pet toothpaste twice a day.
