Residents were devastated when the California wilderness was razed by fire for months. Despite the government’s best efforts, they couldn’t contain the spreading blaze.
Left behind in the wake of its destructive path are the remnants of woods, farms, houses, and various types of machinery. Many animals, wild or pets, also perished.
Combing through the result of the devastation are the brave and tireless members of the search and rescue team. They cling to hope that they would find survivors, but it is rare and few. That is why they were ecstatic when they discovered a pooch, injured yet alive, buried underneath some burnt rubble.
A survivor
Men and women from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team were going through a large farm property when they heard a small cry from underneath one of the tractors. Pieces of metal roofing were covering the machine. After removing all the debris, they found a young pup cowering underneath.
The pup was covered in soot, ash, and minor burns. He must have been there for days without food and water, too scared to move away. The rescuers spared no time and rushed him to a nearby animal clinic.
Left behind
The authorities started looking for the property owner to learn if the dog was his. As it turned out, the farmer owned several dogs, and when they were forced to evacuate, he and his family couldn’t round up all their animals. They had to leave some behind as the fire was getting too close.
One of them was the dog the rescue team found, and his name was Trooper.
Because of the circumstances, Trooper’s owner couldn’t take him back. He didn’t have the space for the dog and the resources to take care of him. Local animal services took him in and took care of his medical needs. Once he has fully recovered, they will find a good home where he can restart his life again.
