Deputy dog warden Dave Nelson was in their office in Mahoning County, Ohio when he received a call about a man mistreating his pet. The caller said that he saw the owner dragging the chain of his pooch. The animal was visibly in pain, but the cruel man wouldn’t stop.
Dave rushed to the site and tried to reason with the dog owner. But when he got close, the situation turned violent. The angry man took out a knife and stabbed the officer. The police and the emergency team arrived soon after.
The deputy dog warden was taken to a hospital while the culprit was arrested and brought to the Youngstown Police Department. Thankfully, Dave survived. The dog was brought to the local shelter and was named Nelson in honor of the officer who saved him.
A new home
George Zordich, a firefighter and athlete who lives in Poland, Ohio, lost their family pet and brought her daughters to the local shelter. They wanted to adopt a new dog and asked if any canines were available. The first one the shelter staff brought out was Nelson. The Zordich family immediately fell in love with him.
Despite going through abuse in his former home, Nelson was very playful with George’s daughters, showing no signs of trauma. He was one of the sweetest dogs they had ever met. Within a week, they sorted out all the papers and took the pooch home.
Namesake
George said that when he heard Nelson’s story, he was touched by the bravery of the man who saved his new pet. He also credits him for bringing the canine into their life. If it weren’t for the deputy dog warden, Nelson would have probably stayed with his abusive owner.
His act saved the dog’s life and brought happiness to George and his kids. Because of this, he has no plans to change the dog’s name. They will be forever grateful to Dave.
