Katie McCoy is a graduate student who lives in Abilene, Texas. Several years before going to Houston for higher education, she adopted a rescue dog and named her Abi. The poodle mix became a huge and essential part of her life, and that is why she felt a big void when the dog went missing.
Runaway pet
Abi was left with her parents when she transferred to Houston. She was devastated when she got the call informing her that her pet had run away. Like any devoted dog owner, she sprung into action doing all she could to find her. It was difficult and challenging as she was more than 300 miles away.
She even went home for the weekend and started distributing flyers. Abi had a collar that had her owner’s name and phone number. She waited for someone to call her, but no one ever did. The dog even had a microchip.
Years went by, and Katie started to lose hope that she would ever find Abi again. Her biggest fear was that her pet didn’t survive long enough for someone to find her and see the information on her tag. But then, approximately five years after the pooch went missing, she received a voicemail from Pasadena Animal Control.
Taken by someone else
Katie didn’t notice right away that she received a voicemail and only checked it after two days. When she finally heard it, she was overjoyed to learn that Abi had been found. But her happiness didn’t last long. She called the shelter immediately and was told that someone had already claimed the dog.
The shelter employee informed her that a person showed them pictures of the dog claiming ownership. It was just a day before she called. Katie deduced that the person could have been part of the family that kept Abi throughout the years she was missing.
Katie said that she was going to fight to get her dog back. She has all the proof of ownership and would take the matter to court if needed. As of now, she is just happy to know that her beloved pet is alive.
