James Madison University student Kayla Blake rented an apartment in Harrisonburg. Her dog, Rebel, stayed in the flat with her.
Rebel was her most devoted friend. She adopted him from the Richmond Animal League, a shelter. Since then, they were always together.
The day she received a call that her apartment building was on fire, she was coaching a soccer game. Rebel was still inside the building. She hurried back to her flat, but she was unable to go inside. There was excessive smoke, and the fire had spread throughout the majority of the structure.
Kayla pleaded with the police officers to save her pet, but the policemen informed her that it was too late. It seemed impossible for anyone to still be alive in the structure given the amount of smoke and fire.
Kayla was inconsolable. She could not believe her beloved Rebel had passed away.
After two days, when the smoke had cleared, Kayla and her companion returned to her flat. Kayla had no expectations at all, but she wanted to at least get Rebel’s tags.
They witnessed the damage caused by the fire. Kayla then heard a faint bark. She contacted the fire department so they could investigate.
After a few minutes, she was reunited with Rebel. The first responders discovered him concealed beneath a desk and a James Madison University flag. They were unable to explain how he endured the flames and smoke.
Rebel sustained quite minor injuries considering the building’s destruction caused by the fire. He suffered just a little burn to the nose. A veterinarian also checked the dog and found that he was in perfect health.
The university allowed Kayla to live in the dorms with Rebel until she could stand on her own two feet again. Kayla was overjoyed and appreciative of this and was ecstatic to have her best friend back. They have become closer than ever before.
