Sergeant Dave Heyhoe and his K9, Treo, are more than just partners. The military dog is his best friend and guardian angel too. The two have been on several tours in Afghanistan, doing explosives detection. Before any military personnel can perform their operations, they, along with several other K9 teams, ensure that the place is safe.
Sgt. Heyhoe’s handling skills and the dog’s training and amazing skills have helped save many people’s lives. The sergeant even credits his partner for keeping him alive in their work. When they are not on the job, Treo helps his handler and other soldiers relax and relieve their stress.
Award-winning pooch
Treo’s bravery and excellence have earned him the PDSA Dickin Medal. This is the highest award and recognition given to any animal in military service. When the dog retired after many years, Sgt. Heyhoe made sure that the devoted pooch would stay with him and his family. This way, he can provide him with the loving home and safe environment that he deserves.
The dog became a beloved part of the Heyhoe family for several years. Treo was showered with love and provided with everything that he needed. Unfortunately, after the dog turned 14, he passed away due to old age. The family was devastated, especially Sgt. Heyhoe.
A lasting memorial
Heartbroken, Sgt. Heyhoe wanted to have something to remind him of his dog all the time. He was so proud of him, and he wanted to show the world that he had the best dog ever. He decided to write a poem and have it tattooed on his arm. They even mixed some of the dog’s ashes on the ink used in the tattoo.
The poem was from Treo’s perspective. It talked about his loyalty and bravery. It also reflected his love for his dad and his willingness to lay his life on the line to save him. And all the pooch wanted in return was to be loved.
