11 years is already a lifetime for most canines. Not a lot of dogs live past that age.
A pit bull named Wiggles spent that long in a shelter, feeling lonely and sad. Because of her health problems and eventually her age, humans tend to overlook him and won’t consider adopting the poor pooch.
But the shelter staff always had hope for her. And when she was 14 years old, she finally got the new start she had long dreamt of.
Surrendered
Wiggles was already three years old when her owners brought her to a no-kill nonprofit animal shelter in Illinois. Her family adored her, but they couldn’t afford her medical treatments because of her constant allergies. They were very sorry to see her go, but they knew she would suffer if she stayed with them. They hoped someone would adopt her and give the pooch a good life.
Unfortunately, that did not happen right away. To make matters worse, the dog’s health problems grew. When she was nine years old, vets found a large tumor on her body. Although they found out the mass was benign, the vets wouldn’t remove it as the operation would be too risky for a dog her age.
The large visible tumor made it even more difficult for Wiggles to get adopted.
Tears of joy
One of the shelter staff made it her mission to find Wiggles a home. When she started working at the facility, the dog was already their longest resident. She couldn’t bear to see her sad face every day anymore. So she made sure her story got around.
After Wiggles got featured by local TV stations and multiple news sites, inquiries started coming in. Soon, a couple went to the shelter and adopted her. They even donated 300 dollars to the charity group.
The concerned staff member shed tears of joy when she found out about it. Finally, after over a decade, Wiggles was going to a home she could call her own.
