At 18 years old, Brandon Joy is already legally blind because of a rare condition known as retinitis pigmentosa. As he is about to enter college, Brandon is looking for a guide dog who could help him navigate through life.
However, service dogs can be an expensive undertaking, so Brandon is keeping his hopes low. Fortunately, though, a group of volunteers known as Wheels for Wishes came to the boy’s rescue.
A Canada-based organization, Wheels for Wishes is a group of individuals who raise funds for people who need the services of service dogs. This organization works in cooperation with the CNIB Guide Dog program in providing life-changing dogs to people.
One of the fund-raising activities that Wheels for Wishes hold is classic car shows. According to the group, this fund-raising activity generates enough funds to finance one service dog to their intended beneficiary.
Although the organization helps young kids, they feel Brandon is still technically a kid. This is why the members of the Wheels for Wishes unanimously decided to help the teenager.
During the fund-raising event, all kinds of cars, bikes, and other vehicles showed support. There were also classic car owners who arrived, showing their full support for the event. The initial goal of the fund-raiser was to have at least $50,000.
While the amount was high, the event’s organizers were optimistic that they would reach the quota. Fortunately, the organizers delivered what they promised and raised the needed amount. According to them, the amount is enough to cover Brandon’s service dog and his other medical needs.
When Brandon learned about this initiative, he could not believe it. He mentioned that he never thought that his dream of having a service dog would come true. He then thanked all the people behind this initiative and promised to pay it forward.
