Having a dog as a pet is amazing for many reasons. Not only do they provide companionship and unconditional love, but they also make great workout partners and will protect your family with their lives if need be. But before you run to the store and bring home a new bundle of fur that matches your own, there are some things every dog owner should know first.
For example, knows that some dogs are born with a chewing habit. While this may be cute when they’re puppies, it’s not so adorable when your pup is an adult and arriving home to destroy shoes or chewed-up garbage.
Here are some things a dog should not chew.
1) Carpets and Rugs
A dog who chews up the carpets and rugs in your home might seemingly look cute but can actually cause a lot of damage. Not only does it ruin the appearance and value of carpets, but dogs often ingest bits of carpet or rug fibers which can cause intestinal blockages and lead to illness or death.
2) Doors
Every pet owner knows that dogs love to get through the door when you open it. But one thing they may not know is that your pup can cause expensive damage by chewing on doors. A door will often times be chewed around the doorknob and where it meets the frame.
3) Furniture
A dog who has a chewing problem will take their habits to your furniture as well, including chairs and couches. Any type of upholstery is fair game for a canine with an insatiable need to chew.
4) Shoes
Whether it’s a thrown-away shoe or a brand new pair from the store, dogs love to put holes in shoes. This harmful habit can also lead to intestinal blockages when their dog eats pieces of the shoes they have chewed up.
5) Electrical Cords
Finally, many dogs love to chew on electrical cords. This is potentially dangerous as it can cause shock or electrocution and even burn your home down. Be sure you store all electric cords out of reach from your dog and also learn how to keep them away from puppies as well.
There’s nothing like the unconditional love a dog has to offer. However, keep in mind that not all dogs can be trusted with everything from your shoes to the garbage. Be sure you educate yourself on what a dog should not chew before bringing one into your home and providing them with a loving environment.
