When a dog gives birth to a large litter, it’s pretty common for some of her puppies to become undernourished; especially when the mama dog is a stray. This is because the mama dog doesn’t have enough nutrition in her body to produce enough milk for her babies. This, in turn, results in a high mortality rate.
A homeless dog in Texas faced this huge dilemma. The pregnant pooch named Stella lived under cars and would roam the streets daily to look for food. Unfortunately, she does not regularly find enough to sustain her health. The future looked very bleak for the expecting mom and her babies.
From one shelter to another
Luckily for Stella, a group of concerned people from a local rescue group in Texas discovered her situation and made all efforts to get her off the streets. She was brought to a local shelter and was quickly moved to another facility in New York.
A few days after her rescue, a nonprofit animal charity organization was asked to take Stella. The shelter holding her did not have enough resources and space for the pregnant pooch. The dog needed a quiet place where she and her puppies would not get stressed. The New York-based rescue group agreed.
Eight puppies
Vets estimated that Stella still had a few weeks before giving birth. But a day after she moved to her new home, they found her in the process of labor. Before the day ended, she had eight pups by her side. It wasn’t even a week since she was rescued.
If they weren’t taken in, Stella and her puppies would have been in a difficult situation. But thanks to the intervention of some kindhearted humans, they now face a bright future. The dogs are surrounded by people that will take good care of them. Hopefully, they will all find their forever homes soon.
