Small Town In New York Adopts Oldest And Longest Staying Shelter Dog

Small Town In New York Adopts Oldest And Longest Staying Shelter Dog

Joseph McNair August 19, 2022

Trigger is a brown and white Pit Bull mix picked up as a stray when he was three years old. He had a bit of a character problem at the start as he was never comfortable around humans or other animals. But in time, he learned to trust the shelter staff.

When he was brought to the shelter, the stray pooch was severely underweight, and his body was covered with old and new wounds. A vet also found out that he has various genetic health problems. The dog had intense food allergies and an autoimmune condition that made his face muscles atrophy.

Trigger’s condition made him look sad, but the shelter workers swear he is a happy dog.

Long shelter stay

Because of his health problems and difficulties trusting people and animals, Trigger was always overshadowed by the other shelter dogs. The pooch didn’t get much interest. Although he had been adopted several times by well-meaning people, the dog would always be returned because he required a lot of attention and effort.

This made the staff and volunteers sad, but they were glad that he was where he could receive the care he needed. Trigger spent most of the time in the administration office and could roam freely in the shelter. They all loved him and always found the time to keep the dog company.

Exactly where he needed to be

After five years in the shelter, the local administrators decided to get him off the adoption list. Trigger was already where he was supposed to be. He had countless people who loved him, and he was already content and happy about his situation. More than just a shelter dog, Trigger acted as a therapy dog to the staff and volunteers.

So they decided to adopt him officially.

One Friday morning, the residents and local authorities gathered in front of the town hall, and together they announced the dog’s adoption. Everybody cheered for Trigger, knowing that his future was not uncertain anymore.
