5 Best Dog Breeds

Joseph McNair June 10, 2021

Around the world, we find many different dog breeds, of all shapes and sizes. Some dogs do great in herding, others in pulling sleds, or hunting. While most dogs were bred for a specific use, nowadays they are more often just family pets or companions. If you are thinking about getting a dog, there is a large variety to choose from. However, as a novice, you may want to know a bit about the best dog breeds for first time owners. These include the Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Border Collie, and Jack Russell Terrier.

These dogs are valued both for their temperaments and their outgoing natures.

#1- Labrador Retriever

Labrador retrievers first originated in Canada. There, they were bred to retrieve hunted game from the water. These dogs are excellent swimmers. They are smart, devoted, obedient, and gentle. They are outgoing dogs that have a friendly and playful temperament, and they do great in families with children. As a result of their kind nature, Labradors are often used as therapy dogs in hospitals and nursing homes.

#2- Golden Retriever

Similarly to Labrador retrievers, Golden retrievers were bred to retrieve game that had fallen into water. These dogs are thought to have originated in England and in the Highlands of Scotland. Golden retrievers are considered the best family dogs all across the world. This is due to their friendly, kind, trustworthy temperament. These dogs are active, full of energy, and love to play. They are also incredibly gentle with children.

#3- German Shepherd

German Shepherd dogs originated in Germany and were used for herding livestock. These dogs are extremely intelligent, and they have a high work drive and high energy. They are loyal and loving to their owners. For decades, they have proved to be faithful companions and outstanding guard dogs, as they are protective of their family. These dogs smart, trainable, strong, and calm under pressure. For that reason, they are often used in police forces and military operations.

#4- Border Collie

Border collies, descendant from the Anglo-Scottish border, were originally bred for herding. These dogs are one of the brightest and smartest dogs on the planet. They love to learn and always have something to do. They are extremely energetic, so they will need a lot of physical activity and playtime. As a result of their high energy and athleticism, border collies do really well in dog sports, like agility, fly-ball and frisbee.

#5- Jack Russell Terrier

The Jack Russell Terrier was once bred for fox hunting in England in the mid-1800’s. However, nowadays the Jack Russell is a considered one of the best family companions. This is due to their playful temperament and their love for children. Jack Russell’s have feisty, lively, friendly personalities, and they are incredibly clever. These small energetic dogs with a big spirit are happy, adventurous, and bold. They are surprising agile. In fact, they are even able to jump up to as high as 5 feet!
