Best dog for living in a Apartment, Penthouse, or Studio

Joseph McNair June 25, 2023

Some dogs are more suitable than others for living in an apartment, penthouse, or studio. When deciding on which dog breed is perfect for living in smaller spaces, there is one dog breed that rises above them all: the Basenji. The below reasons show just how perfect Basenjis are for residing in smaller residences.

Key Characteristics of A Dog Living in a Smaller Space

All breeds require training, but only some have the propensity to learn at a faster and easier rate. Basic training and obedience are important for laying down the ground rules for day-to-day life in an apartment, penthouse, or studio. And dogs that are intelligent are widely known to have a calmer, more laid-back temperament. Basenji dogs are highly intelligent and extremely clever, plus their natural curiosity makes them eager to learn.

Dogs living in Apartment

A second key factor when choosing a dog for apartments is the dog’s energy levels and exercise needs. House dogs have the advantage of having a sizable yard outside and a lot of square footage inside to freely romp around in for hours at a time. But dogs who call a smaller space home do not have this treat, thus it is important to have a furry friend that can stay optimally healthy and happy with living in a smaller abode. Basenjis are great dogs, as they do not require much.

Now that we have gone over the basic characteristics, let’s get more into why Basenjis in particular earn the title as the best dog for apartments.

Overall Stature and Personality

Basenjis are small, compact-sized dogs who exude poise and grace, especially with their elegant horse-like trot. They are very affectionate, loyal, playful, curious, fun-loving, protective, and alert. Plus, they are hypoallergenic and their short coat sheds very little. As far as exercise goes, these high-spirited dogs will be perfectly content with going for an hour-long walk and interacting with humans to get the physical and mental stimulation that they need and deserve.

Origins

This purebred dog originates from the rich continent of Africa–they are even depicted on Ancient Egyptian drawings. The Basenji is identified as a basal breed, meaning they predate the emergence of all other dog breeds. Owning a Basenji is like owning a treasure from an ancient world.

The name Basenji comes from the Congo languages and means “village dog.” This is quite apropos considering apartment living will make your furry friend feel right at home in the close-knit village that an apartment complex offers.

Silenced dogs

Nicknamed the “Barkless Dog,” these dogs are nearly silent as they are anatomically incapable of barking. So instead of loud, noisy barking, they make a quiet yodel-like sound when distressed. This trait is absolutely perfect for penthouse living. Your neighbors will never have to file a noise complaint or look at you and your furry friend with irritation, and you will always be able to get a quiet, restful, and peaceful night’s sleep.

Maintenance

Another awesome trait is Basenji’s cat-like demeanor. A lover of pristine cleanliness, Basenjis lick themselves clean, just like cats. This means that not only are you relieved of frequent dog washing, but your senses will never be overwhelmed by the infamous and distasteful dog odor. This dog breed is independent and low maintenance.

Overall, Basenjis are gorgeous dogs that will be your beloved companion for many years to come. Their unique and fascinating characteristics are well suited for a dog living in a smaller residence. With ancient roots in a continent known for its majesty, the Basenji will evoke the respect of all of your neighbors and will be an absolute pleasure to live within an apartment, penthouse, or studio.
