How do Dogs Know You Are Sad? 5 Ways Dogs Show Their Love to You

Joseph McNair September 13, 2021

As if their loyalty wasn’t enough, dogs have a highly accurate sixth sense. Dog awareness allows them to feel when their owner is having a bad day or is not feeling well. What’s more, some experts say that dogs can tell when a woman is pregnant.

How Do Dogs Know When You Are Sad?

A dog has better mental abilities than you thought. They can’t exactly know what you are going through. However, they are smart enough to understand their owners need some affection.

Dogs learn about their owner’s mood, facial expressions, and more as they spend more time playing and walking together. When something is missing, they show love to help fix things.

5 Ways Dogs Show Their Love to You

These beloved and loyal friends use all their senses to determine when their owners are not fine. Let’s not forget dogs have an outstanding sense of smell. As a result, your dog might want to cheer you up in one of the following ways:

1. They touch you

Dogs seek physical contact in several ways to show love. Some popular ways they do so are:

  • They lick you
  • Put their head on your lap
  • They paw your leg

2. Sleeps in your bedroom

For some dogs, it’s not enough to spend the day with you — especially if you are at work most of the day. A dog can show you his love by entering your room and taking a nap.

It is not that they like to disobey your orders of not going into your bedroom. Instead, it’s a way to say I love you and I’m here for you.

3. Encourages you to play

When your puppy encourages you to play with him, it means he respects you and trusts you. Plus, if your dog brings his favorite toy to you, that is a clear sign that he loves that you are his owner.

4. Holds eye contact/smiles at you

Dogs might encourage you to talk to them or play with them as a therapy. For that reason, dogs might hold eye contact with you and smile for you to pay them attention and distract yourself from what’s bothering you.

Don’t force eye contact to check if they love you, though. I’m sure your dog loves you. There’s no need to make him feel uncomfortable.

5. Gives you space and time to recover

It’s not that your dog doesn’t love you if you aren’t feeling well and he is not around. Some dogs might give their owners space so that you don’t have another responsibility while you’re stressed. They’ll wait until you feel good and go to them. That will mean for them that you are in a good mood once again.
