How To Improve Your Dog’s Diet

How To Improve Your Dog’s Diet

Joseph McNair May 24, 2021

One of the most important health tips when it comes to caring for your dog, is to make sure he has a good diet. Many dog owners fail to appreciate the health benefits of a varied dog diet.

Of course, it is important your dog has access to clean water and a good kibble, but that is not all that he needs. Dogs are omnivores. That means they should eat a diet containing meat, grain and vegetables. A dog on a varied diet will suffer far fewer health problems such as arthritis and heart disease.

What Vegetables Can I Feed To My Dog?

Many of the vegetables we humans eat can also be eaten by dogs. Raw vegetables are better than cooked vegetables as they will offer your dog something crunchy to chew.

The Best Vegetables To Feed Your Dog:

  • Carrots
  • Cucumber
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower

Vegetables such as peas are part of the legume family. Although your dog may eat them, legumes have an outer skin your dog may find hard to digest. Excess wind and stomach cramps are common problems when you feed peas to your dog. Therefore, it is best to avoid peas and other legumes.

Dogs can also eat apples. But, you should not feed your dog the seeds as they contain a small amount of cyanide. However, apples will help to top up your dog’s vitamin C level.

Should I Feed My Dog Vegetables At Every Meal?

There is no reason why not. Many dogs even enjoy crunching on a carrot as a snack.

Cucumber are great for dogs with bad breath. Adding cucumber chunks to your dog’s drinking water will help to keep him cool in the summer.

Having a varied diet is certainly important for our four-legged friends and will help to control his weight. At least 25% of what your dog eats should be made up out of vegetables.
