Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Let Your Dog Ride In The Front Seat

Joseph McNair November 8, 2021

Taking your dog out for a car ride is a great way to spend time with your dog. It can be enjoyable for both of you. However, many owners let their dogs ride in the front seat for a number of reasons. It may be that they want to be near their dog, or so that they can keep an eye on them to avoid any damage to the car. But is allowing your dog to ride in the front seat good for your pet’s safety? Let’s look at some reasons why this may not be the safest way of transportation.

– Higher Risk Of Accident Injuries

There is a much higher risk of your dog becoming injured if you let him ride in the front. Many accidents happen from the front or near the front of the car, and the lack of seat belts and harnessing that many owners forget about can make things even more dangerous. Another risk factor for your dog is that if there was a frontal car accident, it would be easy for your dog to escape through the broken windshield due to the stress and trauma.

– Airbag Danger

Even though airbags can be a lifesaving device for humans, they can be quite the opposite for your dog. If you happen to have any sort of accident that occurs near the front, an airbag will go off, and its force could result in serious injuries for your dog. In some cases, an airbag going off could prove fatal, especially if your dog is of a smaller size.

– You Can Get Distracted

Some dogs are easily excitable, meaning that they can get distracted by pretty much everything. This can include birds, passersby, cats, and other dogs on the sidewalk. If your dog sees something that particularly captures his attention, it could result in him jumping, barking, or moving about. This can be very distracting when you are trying to focus on driving, especially on a busy road.

– Minimal Comfort

One of the most important things during a ride is to provide enough space and comfort for your pet. However, the front seat will not always be able to provide that sort of comfort, especially for a large dog. Sitting upright, especially for a very long time, will not be as comfortable for most dogs as lying down on the back seat would.
