Best Dogs For Seniors

Maltese

The Maltese are companion dogs for seniors because of their affectionate and gentle nature. This dog is easygoing and makes for a great lapdog who loves to spend time with its owner. The Maltese only requires around 30 minutes of physical activity a day, which is great for someone who is not able to provide extensive amounts of exercise. Additionally, the Maltese don’t shed a lot, and his coat will not require a lot of maintenance with regular trimming.

Pug

The pug is a very affectionate and lovable pet that works well for a senior person. They have a very docile temperament and are quiet, so they won’t bark much like other dogs. Pugs are generally low-maintenance, which is great for an elderly person who is unable to provide constant care for their dog because of their limitations. The pug likes to sleep a lot and only needs around 30 minutes of exercise a day, which can be split up into brief walks. They have short fur throughout their body which requires little grooming.

Greyhounds

Despite the common misconception of Greyhounds requiring a lot of exercise, these dogs are low-energy and prefer lying about on the sofa throughout most of the day. They even do great as homes or apartment dogs. Greyhounds need on average 40 minutes to 1 hour of exercise a day, and from time to time have short bursts of energy which requires them to have some free space to run. Their short coats make them very easy to groom, and they shed very little.

Pomeranian

Pomeranians are another great choice for seniors because of their happy and affectionate nature. The Pomeranian makes for a nice lap dog who enjoys the companionship of its owner. This dog loves attention and can help seniors combat loneliness. They need 30 to 40 minutes of exercise a day, and although active, they enjoy relaxing on the sofa with you. Their coat needs brushing from time to time, but their small size requires less grooming time than bigger dogs.

West Highland White Terrier

The West Highland White Terrier, also known as the Westie, is another nice dog companion for seniors. These dogs are extremely happy and friendly, with an affectionate nature. Westies are low-maintenance and easy to handle, which is perfect for an elderly person looking for a dog that doesn’t require a lot of care. They need from around 40 minutes to an hour of exercise each day. The Westie is a low shedding breed that requires moderate grooming.
