Dog Overcomes Depression By Becoming A Surrogate Mother To A Litter Of Kittens

Joseph McNair February 15, 2024

There’s nothing more painful than giving birth to a dead baby. It’s not what you’d expect after caring for the baby in your womb for months. Penny the Chihuahua had to go through that pain when she gave birth to a stillborn puppy. She was so devastated that she entered into a state of depression.

The grieving mom

Jeffery Mullins and Dale Fulk are Penny’s paw parents. They noticed that she cried day in and day out after learning that her baby was dead. It pained them so much to see her like that, but they didn’t know how to help her. They called the animal shelters in their area to ask if they had a litter of puppies who were looking for a surrogate mother. The two figured, that since Penny still had milk in her breasts, giving her a litter of puppies might help.

Mullins and Fulk had several failed attempts at finding a litter of puppies for Penny. Their search came to an end when they chanced upon Cat’s Cradle who told them about a litter of kittens that needed milk. They were iffy at first but eventually welcomed the idea.

Penny’s maternal instincts

Penny and the kittens were a perfect match. The litter was being bottle-fed at the shelter because their mother did not want to feed them. They were thrilled when Penny allowed them to suck milk from her breasts. She knew that they needed a mother, and they knew that she needed them.

They had an instant connection, and they became inseparable. You could see that Penny embraced her role as their mother. She’s also learned to accept her baby’s death and move on. Her focus is on the five kittens who need all the love, care, and nurturing she can give.
