How Do Dogs Communicate With Us?

How Do Dogs Communicate With Us?

Joseph McNair January 17, 2022

Although it would be nice if all dogs could communicate with us in the same ways we do with each other, unfortunately, dogs can’t talk. However, this does not mean our four-legged friends don’t communicate with us by other means. There are many ways our dogs can tell us they are happy, excited, sad, or anxious. What are some of those ways?

1. Body

Body language plays a major role in how dogs communicate with humans. When alert, a dog will stand straight and hold his head high. If playful or excited, a dog may wriggle or shake his body. If a dog is fearful, he will keep his body lower to the ground. Aggression may also cause the hackles to rise.

2. Mouth

Your dog will use his mouth to show a lot of things that reveal how they are feeling. Dogs will usually keep their mouth open when happy, but while showing aggression, a dog will bare his teeth to show that he is angry. A dog will draw the corner of his mouth back when fearful.

3. Tail

Another vital way dogs communicate with us is with their tail. When your dog is happy, his tail will wag in a relaxed manner, or be fast-paced if excited. A dog may also keep his body rigid and wag his tail slowly when alert. Dogs will put their tail between legs if scared or submissive.

4. Ears

Although not all dog breeds can move their ears, some dogs have ears that stand up and can be a move to signal different things. Your dog’s ears will stand tall when alert or focused, but will usually be laid back when happy and excited, or scared and submissive

5. Verbal

This is one of the most obvious ways dogs communicate. Dogs bark in a high-pitched manner when they are happy or excited, but deep and loud when showing aggression, along with growling. When relaxed or content, a dog may grunt or sigh.
