Misunderstood Rescue Dog’s Life Turns Around After Owner Learns He Is Deaf

Misunderstood Rescue Dog’s Life Turns Around After Owner Learns He Is Deaf

Joseph McNair October 9, 2023

Acorn is a gorgeous white pit bull who was initially labeled as a troublemaker. During his time in the shelter, and even in his foster home, the pooch refused to follow commands or acknowledge the people around him. He usually finds himself in a bind because he gets bored quickly and finds destructive ways to entertain himself.

When he was brought to a local shelter in Cleveland after getting picked up as a stray, volunteer workers said that Acorn quickly established a reputation as a naughty dog. There would be times when he would pick up a full water bowl and throw it at whoever passed by. Sometimes, he would bang that same metal bowl on the walls and make a ruckus. He would do this at all times of the day.

The troublesome dog’s antics caused the other animals to go crazy as well. Even in the dead of night, the shelter would erupt in barks and howls. The staff couldn’t handle the daily commotion, so they decided to find a foster home for Acorn. Maybe being in a home, rather than a cramped kennel, would change his behavior.

Initially, it seemed that the new environment wouldn’t help Acorn at all. Once he was in his foster home, he started running around, knocking furniture over. The dog would also chew on almost everything, causing a lot of damage. No amount of talking or screaming could get the dog’s attention.

His foster mom felt really frustrated, and she was ready to give up and return Acorn to the shelter.

Peculiar

But the volunteer noticed something strange before she could take the dog back. Unlike other dogs, Acorn would not react whenever someone entered a room. The pooch wouldn’t acknowledge her until she touched him or she was in his line of sight. This made her think that the pup was deaf.

A visit to a vet confirmed her suspicions. Once they knew Acorn’s condition, the shelter placed her in a special training program for deaf dogs. They finally found the right approach.

Acorn’s behavior vastly improved, and he has learned to obey commands using hand signals. With this development, he became an amazing companion. This prompted his foster mom to adopt him. He was just a misunderstood pooch.
