5 Things You Should Never Say To Your Dog

5 Things You Should Never Say To Your Dog

Joseph McNair September 2, 2021

One thing is for sure is that dogs thrive from regular and consistent training. These social canines also get agitated and may act impulsively depending on how they are treated or talked to.
So, whether you are a novice dog owner or you just got yourself a new canine companion, then this article got you covered. If you are a bit hazy on which words you shouldn’t say to your dog, we give you a brief rundown on 5 things you should avoid saying to your dog.

Stop

This is an unclear word. Remember, dogs are very active animals, and in the course of the day, they engage in so many activities. So by telling them to stop every time you find them doing a particular thing will sure leave them confused. Instead, be specific and tell them not to do whatever it is that you don’t want them to do.

Come

Note that dogs remember what they are told more so if it’s said to them repeatedly. If the word come is associated with activities that your dog finds unpleasant, they will retaliate and won’t obey your commands. Use reward-based training for more effective communication between you and your dog.

Down

Learn to say drop it instead of down to avoid confusing your dog. This will reinforce your dog’s obedience to your commands and will also prevent confusing it. Remember that even though your dog remembers training, its brain is not built like that of a human, and it’s subject to confusion when given different daily commands.

No

No! It sounds like a harsh command that is not empathetic. And just like humans, dogs also get upset, and when they get upset, these social animals are bound to retaliate by refusing to acknowledge you as the authority in the house.

Never yell

No one loves being yelled at, especially dogs. This instills fear in them, and they definitely will want to show you that they can also be boss by refusing to do whatever it is that you want them to do. Instead of yelling at your dog, try and use a more friendly dog training approach.

Key takeaway

Avoid mixing commands when training or talking to your dog. Remember never to yell to your dog or say words like come! No! Down! Or Stop! These words are bound to turn these social animals into pessimists.
