How to Handle Dogs at Play

How to Handle Dogs at Play

Joseph McNair November 12, 2024

Although we can easily associate dogs with love for play, it is an important activity for their overall well-being. Playing is a good way for dogs to relieve stress and, most importantly, provides cognitive, physical, and social benefits for them.

The following are some essential reasons why play is beneficial to dogs.

A play is a Rigorous Physical Activity and a good Exercise for Dogs

Playing is a great energy outlet for your dog. It allows them to use all the pent-up energy inside, making them too tired to be destructive indoors. Hence,, “a good dog is a tired dog” was coined. A dog with no chance of playing can develop unlikable habits, such as chewing just to pass the time.

Creates a Beautiful Bond between you and your dog

Playing with your dog allows you to form a strong bond together. Only a few animals play until adulthood, but dogs and humans do. That is why it is impossible not to create a strong bond with each other if we can play and have fun together.

Playtime offers mental stimulation in dogs like no other.

Among the many things playing is beneficial to a dog is its ability to keep them entertained the whole day. This prevents them from developing distractive behaviors, which can be challenging to undo over time. So, playing is physically beneficial and mentally stimulating to your dogs. Many games will keep your dog focused, busy, and entertained.

You can use Playtime to Train your Dog

Not only is playing fun, but it is also a perfect opportunity to give basic training and improve manners in your pets. Puppies learn a lot in playing the first time. If they are too rough to their siblings, they can get a nip from their buddies or mother or may stop from playing at all.

Dogs are very observant and follow social cues from us. Certain games help dogs decide when to be gentle and when to exert force as necessary.

When Boredom Strikes, Play is the best Outlet

Dogs get bored, too. Not releasing pent-up energy can lead to behavioral issues like excessive barking or chewing. Hence, letting dogs exercise and increase their play time can help keep them on track.

Playtime will not only prevent them from having a lot of time to look for ways to entertain themselves but also allow them to do something meaningful.

Just to sum it all up, playing is not only physically good for your pets but also a great way to spend time together. It is the love for playing that both humans and dogs share that makes us love each other very much.

Furthermore, it prevents our dogs from developing destructive behavior due to not doing anything at all. What’s more, it’s not only beneficial to our dogs but also to us, the owners.
